Smart Energy Now® expands by leaps and bounds!

Congratulations to the Smart Energy Now® team across uptown contributing to the many successes! The number of Energy Champions and Smart Energy Now® team members are growing.  More and more of us are training up, checking in, and reducing energy waste in our offices.

The last couple of weeks have been very exciting.  We have two new partnership stories to share that should inspire the rest of us across uptown!

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center is “Flipping Out”—they are stocked with buckets of crabs and aim to turn off 90% of the lights in County buildings.  Old City Hall is several weeks into their campaign and has already seen significant improvements in the numbers of lights being turned off.  And, they are also having a good time!
  • The Charlotte Observer’s 400 employees are learning about summertime energy saving steps to take, from getting in shape for the summer by taking the stairs to being patriotic by decreasing energy consumption.  We’re excited to continue to follow their incredible journey and progress.
Tell us your stories by submitting your progress on our Project Tracker, or pop us an email at: SmartEnergyNow@Duke-Energy.com.  We love to hear from the Smart Energy Now® community!

Did you know that 30% of office energy use is wasted energy?

Lew does and is taking action to combat the waste!

One of our over 500 trained Energy Champion’s in uptown, Lew won an iPad just for signing up for Smart Energy Now® on- line!  You can spread the word by telling your friends and colleagues to sign up, too, at www.SmartEnergyCharlotte.com.

Lew works in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center building in the City’s IT department. Since attending the Smart Energy Now® Energy Champion training, he keeps up productivity in his office without using any artificial lights. Lew found out that he enjoys working by natural light and doesn’t miss the fluorescents at all! He made a point to tell his supervisor that he’s working even though he’s been Flipping Out (his artificial lights).

Lew also purchased a “Kill A Watt” EZ meter to track energy usage for computers and chargers for the office.  Lew and his coworkers are passing the meter around the office to educate people to turn off their monitors at night.  Belkin also makes a simple device called the Conserve Insight that is easy to use to monitor plug load energy use.

Lew says, “I had no idea until the [Energy Champion] training that a third of the energy that comes into this building is wasted.  That is a very sobering thought.”  We think that’s something that we can all agree on.

Smart Energy Now® will be Powering Down in our next campaign, so keep an eye out for more information on that soon—or hopefully you want to keep Flipping Out in your office and will also get started Powering Down like Lew right now.

Steak with a side of energy conservation?

Younes Salah uses the Smart Energy Now® kiosk to gauge how busy he’ll be at Morton’s Steakhouse! Younes, who’s worked at Morton’s for nine years, recently noticed the connection between how much energy is being used in Uptown Charlotte and the number of restaurant customers. He reminds us that the kiosk is also a great reminder to be energy conscious– I’ll let Younes explain:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLu1avQ1itQ

Younes also states that if the energy usage is below 7 million it’s usually a predictor that he will not have a profitable day, and if usage is at 9 million or above it will be a successful day. Since Smart Energy Now continues to gain momentum and employees continue to reduce energy, Younes may now have to find other ways to prognosticate his work day.

Watt Counts!

Sarah takes her responsibility as an Energy Champion very seriously!  She aims to reduce energy usage in her department by leading her co-workers to get excited about reducing their individual energy waste around the office.

And, you can see why the Smart Energy Now® team knows an exceptional Energy Champion when we see one.  Before launching her campaign, Watt Counts!, Sarah compiled a presentation with facts on energy consumption, presented at a Kick-off meeting, and now she continues to mention it at every team meeting.  She also did a pre-program audit to check how energy was being wasted in her department, including looking closely at task lighting left on, laptops and monitors left on, and other obvious wasteful practices.

She then implemented several tactics to raise her colleagues’ awareness:

• Producing a goal chart tracking energy conservation progress (in kWh) to an agreed upon end-of-year goal.
• Holding a kick-off lunch and presenting background, program details, goals, and incentives.
• Introducing energy consumption information, energy saving facts, or a new waste reducing tip at the beginning of each team meeting.
• Doing bi-weekly audits to track energy conservation progress.
• Sending bi-monthly emails with a reminder check list, asking for feedback or suggestions for energy conservation.

She’s continuing to lead this work through the end of 2012, at which point, the small actions will become easy to do habits around the office. Her department will hold a celebratory lunch at the end of the year when their goal is reached. Two additional team members will continue to track items that are left on (task lighting, laptops, monitors, headsets, etc.) overnight by checking in the mornings and evenings and entering “infractions” into a tracking spreadsheet. Using the Kill-a-watt meter, they are determining how much energy each of these items consumes and calculating the amount of energy wasted by things left on over night and on the weekends.

Join Sarah and the rest of us this Friday (April 20) to celebrate the little things we are all doing together at our “Flipping Out Fiesta!” from 11:00 a.m-1:00 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Atrium Plaza (look for the Tesla all-electric sports car).

Cheri made the connection!

According to Cheri, before she was a Smart Energy Now® Energy Champion, she “used to talk a big one when it came to energy consumption.”  But, like many others she knew, she didn’t take enough action. She immediately jumped on the Energy Champion training opportunity to learn how to “break her own bad habits by helping others break theirs.”

It’s been a few short weeks since she became a trained Energy Champion, and now she’s managing an extremely successful campaign involving all 40 people on her floor.

We asked Cheri to tell her story so others around Uptown could benefit from her successes – and, we are excited to share what we learned.

Cheri quickly started gaining momentum by giving presentations to the four different groups on her floor.  She spoke about easy ways to reduce energy waste, and they all got very excited about taking responsibility for their own waste.  The only Energy Champion on her floor, Cheri’s still gotten everyone involved—“it’s a fun group and they immediately jumped onboard”.  The team is focusing on flipping out unnecessary lights, turning off appliances, and opening their door manually, instead of hitting the automated door button.

The Flipping Out toolkit was a huge success; people had fun “crabbing” each other and within the first few weeks, everyone was remembering to turn off lights — no one wanted to be crabbed!

To generate participation, Cheri’s team used “Adopt-A-Light” for people in cubicles that don’t have their own task lighting. The cube workers have stepped up to take responsibility for the lights in common areas, such as meeting rooms, break rooms, and storage areas.  They have even decorated the light switches to claim them as their own!

To reward her fellow employees, Cheri created her own competition.  She made ENERGY STAR cards that coworkers hand out when they see someone reducing energy waste. Everyone turns in their cards at the end of the month, and the person with the most cards wins a lunch with the director of their group. Says Cheri, “Everyone is eager to participate and it’s become a fun challenge.”

Cheri was also excited to report that her coworkers are bringing these lessons home and sharing the message with the people they love.  Cheri has even drawn crabs and posted them near her home light switches as a gentle reminder to turn off lights.

In her new blog post, Cheri challenges YOU to find inspiration, too!  Read more about it in her terrific Act Louder! blog post.

Waste not want not

The past couple of weeks have been great for our program. We attended two very high powered conferences. The first was Edison Electric Institute’s Powering the People conference in DC; which I blogged about a few weeks ago. The second was the EE Global conference sponsored by the Alliance to Save Energy. We exhibited the interactive kiosk at both conferences and it was well received.

The opening plenary of the EE Global conference featured Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Director General of UNIDO, who declared 2012 as the “International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.” He talked about energy poverty and resource scarcity from a global perspective. It was a compelling moment for all of the attendees. After his speech, he transitioned to a panel discussion with the who’s who for global sustainability. There was one exchange that caused me to toss and turn that night.

Here is my paraphrased recollection:

As one of the panelists (an American top executive for a fortune 100) spoke about trying to figure out how to get his teenage daughter to turn off the lights, he made a joke about not buying her a car if she did not adhere. Another panelist from a developing country simply said, “and therein lies the challenge, as we speak about providing electricity so that people can eat, bathe, study at night; we have those that have excess. How do we create a global sense of urgency and help people connect the dots that tie access to electricity to a more secure and stable planet?”

Please understand that the statement was not made in a judgmental or condemning fashion, it was just simply stated. All panelists including the American nodded in agreement and a very robust conversation followed. As a matter of fact, that same panelist from the developing country went on to say that there are many examples of waste in developing countries because the markets have not demanded that the full cycle of energy be captured. As an example as gas is being gathered, the old practice of allowing an open flame to burn off the excess is still in place. The amount of gas that is simply burned at the site is enough to provide energy to small villages. Yet the companies are reluctant to invest in the technology and training because of unstable market situations. Well the markets are unstable because the energy is unreliable and scarce and so the cycle continues.

Declaration of Change

The Smart Energy Now® effort is important work. It is not a conversation about sustainability for the sake of a conversation. It truly has the ability to shift the market and cause a chain reaction which could lead to real change. It’s a complex issue but it can be solved. The question we are asking is “Will the market support a program based on behavior change?” We have seen some very positive signs but we have a long way to go. In fact, today we are announcing a new tactic. As we continue to work with building owners, facility engineers, office workers and property managers. We are starting our “Declaration of Change”. The Smart Energy Now team will contact EVERY single tenant in a participating building in the coming months and ask a member from their leadership team to sign this declaration. More details to come but in short, this will be a commitment to actively engage with the program by encouraging and supporting their employees to take action.

Are we relevant in the global discussion?

What can Envision Charlotte and Smart Energy Now do to help a village in a developing country gain reliable and affordable access to energy? I believe we have the ability to prove the following: Access may allow for excess but it certainly does not have to lead to waste. If we can do that, then others will follow, the shift begins and the cycle will eventually be replaced with sustainable energy for all.

Check out my short clip from the EE Global conference.

Powering the People on Electric Avenue

Ok…its old school time…does anyone remember the song Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant? Does anyone remember Happy Days?

This past week we showcased the Envision Charlotte (Smart Energy Now®) interactive kiosk at the Edison Electric Institute’s Powering the People 2.0 conference in Washington DC. This was an invitation only conference for the top forward thinking utilities in the country. The exhibit hall was actually named Electric Avenue which the local reporter from Fox News quickly tied back to Eddy Grant. Our kiosk was Fonzy for the day — the coolest one on the avenue; the one that the other smart gadgets wanted to be or at least wanted to hang out with for the day. All of the other utilities were impressed by the great work that we are doing here in Charlotte and our ambitious goal of reducing energy consumption through energy efficiency (technology improvements) and most importantly through energy conservation (people changing their behavior resulting in a reduction in wasted energy). Here is a shot at the Fox News crew moments before we went live for their morning show. It was great fun as I got my 45 seconds to explain Smart Energy Now and the kiosk on live television (no do-overs, better get it right the first time kind of thing).

In a few weeks representatives from Europe will be here to find out more about the Energy Capital. We have been asked to give them an overview of Smart Energy Now®. People outside of the 277 loop are continuing to pay attention to what is happening here in Charlotte. My hope is that our own backyard will continue to give us attention and support.

My ask of you this coming week, simply find one of your uptown colleagues, that has not joined us yet and make it your goal to get them signed up. Still wondering if we can create a movement? You know the plastic grabs that we are giving out as part of the “Crab You’re It” campaign? The company that we are ordering them from – ran out of inventory because of our campaign! They will have them back in stock in the next few days and we will finish sending out the toolkits that have been requested.

Back to the Powering the People 2.0 conference, the reporter closed the segment by saying “the companies are doing their parts but are we doing ours?”. I could not have asked for a better closing comment and I think we have a lot of you out there that will stand and show by your ACTIONS that the answer for Charlotte is a resounding YES!

Pink Slime in our schools…really??

If you have been following my posts, then you know that I am big fan of Jamie Oliver and his Food Revolution. One of his most recent campaigns caught my attention. It is about the pink slime that is used in approximately 70% of the ground beef in the U.S.

Jamie called it out and now there is a movement to get this stuff out of our schools. People are rallying behind this campaign and the number of supporters grows daily.

Is it possible to take this whole discussion about energy efficiency and energy conservation and make it a burning platform? It is an interesting question that the core team and many of our Energy Champions are working to address on a daily basis.

Here is what we are doing to bring this issue to the front of mind for uptown Charlotte office workers:

  • Energy Champions training sessions for office workers. We have trained about 600 from over 20 uptown buildings representing dozens of companies. If you have not heard about a session coming to your building or if you missed it, then shoot us a note at smartenergynow@duke-energy.com.
  • Town hall meetings with facility managers and building operators to share best practices and call their peers to action. Check out this photo at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. We had a full house and a lot of great ideas and best practices were shared.Image
  • Discussions with property owners and property managers about lease structures, agreements with cleaning crews and split incentives regarding utility expenses.
  • Launch of our LinkedIn group – join us!

Not quite convinced that energy efficiency and/or energy conservation deserve the burning platform designation. Stick with us, we are just beginning. In the meanwhile, check out this link to learn more about pink slime.
